Sullivan to continue soccer career at Miami
A 2009 St. Luke's School graduate, Sullivan will continue her soccer career this September at Miami University of Ohio as a freshman and one of the newest members of the Miami Red Hawks. For the 18-year-old center midfielder, the opportunity to play for an NCAA Division I school in the Mid-American Conference is the reward for countless hours of practice, league play and merit distinction in everything from youth soccer to travel teams, and from premier leagues to high school competition. Sullivan completed her high school soccer career last fall as co-captain for the St. Luke's girls varsity team, which won the 2008 Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) and New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) championships. Sullivan was named to the FAA All-League team, the All-NEPSAC team, and the Connecticut All-State team (having also been selected in 2007), and was also selected to the Boston Globe's All-Star Scholastic Team in the Preparatory School category.
Milwaukee sports market can survive a few losses
So would it really matter if a couple of car races, a largely irrelevant PGA event and an indoor soccer team went away like all those onetime Milwaukee franchises that went bust or relocated? Yes, it would matter for the quality-of-life benefits they provide. But the market's got to decide. For example, the Mile, for all its history and tradition as the oldest motor speedway in the world, deserves to roll on. The international panache the IndyCar race brings to West Allis is priceless. But the argument advanced by a potential promoter that the track must have public funding like Miller Park and Lambeau Field hits a Turn 1 wall. The days of sports mooching on the taxpayer dime are over. There has to be a better way for racing to survive. If Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker can save pro golf here by moving the tournament out of the British Open's shadow and convincing some A-listers to play - hey Tiger, you promised you'd come back after we gave you your start - give them a sponsor's exemption into City Hall.
