Tyrone Marshall returns to FIU to compete in Gold Cup

General opinion is that the high-water mark for FIU men's soccer came on December 13, 1996. On that chilly afternoon in Richmond, Va., the Golden Panthers -- then a Division I program for less than a decade -- earned a spot in the national final with a 4-0 rout of UNC-Charlotte.

The specifics might be fuzzy more than 12 years later, but there's a moment that those in attendance -- and anyone associated with FIU soccer -- will never forget: Tyrone Marshall, in the 57th minute, unleashing a bicycle kick from 15 yards out. The acrobatic shot connected, put FIU up 2-0 and guaranteed the Golden Panthers a place in the title match against St. John's.

Marshall returns to his alma mater Friday, not for a reunion, but as member of the Jamaican national team. The Reggae Boyz face El Salvador in the second half of a CONCACAF Gold Cup doubleheader at FIU Stadium.

Men's soccer announces schedule

The 2009 Northern Illinois men's soccer schedule was released today and there are definitely a few games of note.

The Huskies will play six teams that made the NCAA tournament last season and new coach Eric Luzzi will see a familiar face when NIU plays Oregon State and former coach Steve Simmons on Sept. 25 at Oregon State.

“It’s a wonderfully exciting schedule, it’s going to be exciting for the team,”Luzzi said in a news release.“With that comes a high degree of responsibility for the guys to be as prepared as possible far when we get together on (reporting day) August 14th.”

The Huskies will welcome No. 9 Northwestern on Oct. 7, and host No. 12 Tulsa on Sept. 11, as part of the NIU adidas/Magnuson Inn and Suites Invitational.

Fitzgerald a part of NH soccer's growth

As far as soccer coverage goes, the United States men have been getting all the press in recent weeks, but this weekend three kids from New Hampshire are part of a group that has headed three time zones west of here to hopefully make some headlines of their own.

Nashua's Sean Fitzgerald, a Bishop Guertin graduate, Bedford's Sam Kelley (who played at Manchester West) and Christian Rodriguez of Manchester Memorial are all members of FC Greater Boston, better known as the Boston Bolts, a Massachusetts-based team that headed out of town Thursday to compete for the U.S. National Soccer Academy Championship in California.

Playing in one of the most competitive and prestigious leagues in the country, the Bolts U1-7/18 team is now one of just eight teams left with a chance to win a national championship.
