Brilliant scores winning goal as Impact beat Syria 2-1 in friendly

Tony Donatelli also scored for the Impact, who play in the top division of the United Soccer Leagues.

"We knew that Syria was a team able to circulate the ball well and they caused many problems this way," said Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos.

"However, (we) gradually came back during the match and adapted. We were able to build on our opportunities and this is what we need to do in our league games."

Syria opened the scoring in the ninth minute of play. After a cross from Syrian midfielder Wael Ayan, Impact defender Hicham Aaboubou scored an own goal, accidentally deflecting the ball past goalkeeper Srdjan Djekanovic to his left.

"This was definitely a tough match since it was against a national team, but we are a team that needs to work hard in every game," Impact midfielder Sandro Grande said.

Angry fans want to give boot to soccer promoter

Some angry fans are taking action against the promoter of the "Zidane and Friends" Canada-wide soccer tour, complaining that other than French icon Zinedine Zidane, the games have featured a distinct lack of "friends."

When the event was announced in April, organizers said a host of stars would travel to take part on Mr. Zidane's team, including several well-known professionals based in Europe and a number of high profile Italians who have recently retired. They would take on a team of Canadian all-stars in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver between June 25 and July 4. The Vancouver date has since been put off until July 12 due to an injury to the star attraction.

As late as last week, the event's website still named an impressive selection of players, none of whom made the trip to Canada.
