| MCCOLLUM'S COLUMN: NCAA's green light reflects some of what's good
A key aspect of the NCAA's green light is that women's soccer and baseball have been cleared for full NCAA and postseason eligibility for this season. A school in transition is allowed to place one women's and one men's sport (other than football or basketball) on a fast track to possibly achieve full eligibility a year ahead of the other sports. This year, women's soccer and baseball can compete for fully recognized Southland Conference titles and enter NCAA postseason competition. Getting that clearance for the initial wave of sports in a great sign that the process has gone well. It's the NCAA's equivalent of giving a big smiley face to the effort. Getting UCA into the final year of the process enhances UCA's branding and improves the recruitment process, both for athletes and regular students.

The Kings play their home games at Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder as members of the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League. They hosted Kalamazoo on Saturday Most of the players have aspirations to play in Major League Soccer or other high-level leagues, and the PDL serves as their stepping stone. "We treat them and train them like they are professionals," Kings head coach Roby Stahl said. "They put a lot of sacrifice and hard work in." Other teams in the PDL have players who have competed in the top professional leagues and are finishing out their careers, but Stahl has taken a different approach with the Kings. He has built his team primarily with young college players, 75 percent of whom come from around Cincinnati. "The payoff for them is they become better college players," Stahl said.

I miss the way Bob's toaster used to pop up on cue and how Bob's office clock always stood at noon. And Mrs. Bob... one happy woman. The guy behind it all, however, is in the slammer for 25 years.
