McDonald named soccer coach at McMinn

David McDonald, the assistant coach for McMinn County High School soccer for the last four years, has been named the head coach for both the boys' and girls' soccer teams. He takes over for long time coach Bobby Earls, who resigned last month.

McMinn County Principal John Burroughs and Athletic Director Jimmy Haynie both recommended McDonald and McMinn County Director of Schools David Pierce has given his approval.

McDonald teaches at Calhoun Elementary and will remain there while coaching at McMinnn. He is originally from Texas and played four years of soccer at Tennessee Wesleyan College before graduating from TWC in 1998.

McDonald, 35, has a lengthy career as competitive soccer coach and was also an assistant coach under Bill McConkey at McMinn Central for a few years. "I'm extremely excited about the opportunity and want to continue the tradition of success established here at McMinn," McDonald said.

Talkin' Soccer

A mature, reasonably intelligent conversation about soccer on one of ESPN's mainstream headache-inducing blab-fests talk shows? Go figure.

From "Around the Horn" after the USA's upset of Spain.....

Bill Plaschke: "It's significant only if they sustain it. You remember they made the quarterfinals of the World Cup in 2002, that was the greatest win in soccer history, they've disappeared since then. This is nice, but it's not World Cup and they were outshot 29-9. Let's see if they can sustain it."

Tim Cowlishaw: "I don't want to dump on this team for this victory, but a Miracle on Grass? [a New York Times reference] That will happen when Team USA wins the World Cup. That [1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team] was amateurs in Lake Placid beating the Soviet machine that won gold after gold after gold in the Olympics."

Jay Mariotti: "Don't qualify it! This was a major victory in U.S.
