| What's working for me
Soccer: the pride is back. The whole sports world noticed when the USA men's team nearly upset the legendary Brazilians in last weekend's Confederations Cup. That's what making your first final in the 105-year history of FIFA will do. ... AND WHAT'S NOT 1. Twitter punkers. "On 09/18/1979, Farrah Fawcett & Michael Jackson were both guests on the Tonight Show w/Johnny Carson, co-hosted by Ed McMahon," someone posted assertively to Twitter following Jackson's death. Wow! I thought, and immediately re-posted this "factoid" to my followers, many of whom sent it further downstream. Only later did it occur to me to check -- and learn that Johnny didn't even tape that night. 2. Other Michael Jackson tributes. All that crotch-grabbing on the "BET Awards" made me think of the Sunday-night baseball game I was missing.
A Reflection on Brazil's Gift to Obama
Now, as a soccer head myself, I can think of no better gift to receive from the Brazilian President than a signed jersey. I certainly hope that it is displayed properly in the White House, and even though there is no record of the First Family having any particular interest in or affinity to soccer, nonetheless this is quite a cool gift. No complaints there. Except one. It was barely a week ago that the United States and Brazil played the championship game of the Confederations Cup in South Africa, the 2010 World Cup host. This was the first time in history that the United States men's soccer team made it to the final of an extra-regional international soccer tournament. For Brazil, this was old hat, a big yawn, which paled in comparison to their five (yes, five) World Cup Championships. But for the upstart Americans, this was a big deal.
It's a huge day for soccer fans in Seattle
Soccer buffs in Seattle might suffer from split vision today as there will be some overlap between the US-Brazil championship game in the Confederation Cup and the Sounders match against Colorado in MLS play. The USA game kicked off at 11:30 p.m. from South Africa on ESPN2 and CBUT. The Sounders match starts at 1 p.m. on KONG 6/16. Here's a good story on the U.S.'s effort to make history, as well as my preview on the Sounders' game that focuses on a revived Fredy Montero. Sounders management is attempting to ease the conflict for fans attending their game by airing the international match on the Qwest Field video boards before and after their own match. Fans who arrive early at Qwest can watch the first half of the Confederation Cup finale live on the big screens.
