| Soccer squad reaps harvest of MVC awards
The Tomah High School girls soccer team posted its best-ever finish in the Mississippi Valley Conference standings, and it brought the Timberwolves a big harvest of post-season awards.Six Tomah players won spots on the MVC all-conference team, and Tomah coach Dale Jonson was honored with the league’s coach of the year award.Tomah finished second in the final standings, which are determined by both the regular season and the post-season tournament. The Timberwolves were 4-1-1 during the regular season and clinched second place by defeating Holmen in the tournament’s quarterfinal round.Three Tomah players -- midfielders Nicole Vollmer and Nikki Reinart and defender Brandi Patterman -- were named first team all-conference. All three are seniors.Jonson described Vollmer as a natural leader."She was a team leader on the field, and off the field she directed a lot of the off-field activities," Jonson said.Reinart was a midfielder who often dominated games with her strength and aggressiveness.
SPORTS BRIEFS: BCMS first football practice
The Barren County High School girls soccer team will hold tryout sessions July 16-17 at the soccer complex. All girls enrolled in the Barren County school system in grades 7-12 are eligible to attend. All participants must bring a copy of a current physical form as well as a parent permission form. Forms can be picked up at the front office of the high school. Girls should also bring their own cleats and shin guards. .
McDonald named soccer coach at McMinn
David McDonald, the assistant coach for McMinn County High School soccer for the last four years, has been named the head coach for both the boys' and girls' soccer teams. He takes over for long time coach Bobby Earls, who resigned last month. McMinn County Principal John Burroughs and Athletic Director Jimmy Haynie both recommended McDonald and McMinn County Director of Schools David Pierce has given his approval. McDonald teaches at Calhoun Elementary and will remain there while coaching at McMinnn. He is originally from Texas and played four years of soccer at Tennessee Wesleyan College before graduating from TWC in 1998. McDonald, 35, has a lengthy career as competitive soccer coach and was also an assistant coach under Bill McConkey at McMinn Central for a few years. "I'm extremely excited about the opportunity and want to continue the tradition of success established here at McMinn," McDonald said.
