PREP SOCCER: Summer league valuable for younger players

As the Santa Fe High School boys summer soccer league is well into its second week, one of the common concerns faced by area coaches has been balancing rosters and rotations.

Even though his team has had a strong showing, La Mirada coach Philip Yovino admits that his tournament squad is vastly different than the one he plans to feature at the start of the 2009-10 season.

"I only have two varsity starters from last year on the team right now," Yovino said. "Some of my guys are on vacation while others are out for a variety of reasons."

That didn't stop the Matadores from posting a noteworthy 3-2, come-from-behind victory over El Rancho on Thursday.

La Mirada trailed 2-0 at the half but rallied behind two goals from Joey Passafiume.

The forward first converted a game-tying penalty kick with 10 minutes remaining and then impressively stripped an El Rancho defender in front of the net and nailed the clinching score with less than two minutes left in the game.

Wildcats Soccer Roundup: July 10, 2009

The 5-0 win versus the Chiefs was a clinic in soccer. It was as close to a perfect soccer game as 8-year-old boys could possibly play. Suffocating defense, disciplined positioning, no-look/one-touch passes, tremendous foot skills, and acrobatic goals left the crowd murmuring with the realization that they had just witnessed soccer the way it ought to be played. Congratulations boys!!!! And thanks for a terrific Father's Day present from all the coaches and dads in attendance.

Soccer: Fans from far and near take in FC Dallas' trip to Permian

There were the season-ticket holders and members of the Inferno, FC Dallas' fan club, hardcore soccer fans from outside of the Permian Basin and local fans.

The members of the Inferno: Jon and Brenda Beard, and Andre Dobbs, drove from Dallas to Midland on Tuesday not sure what to expect, but upon arrival were pleasantly surprised.

"This stadium is actually really nice," said Brenda Beard, wearing a "Dallas Till I Die" scarf around her neck like her two fellow fans. "And this is the almost the full (FCD) roster."

The trio was also pleased to get a chance for an up-close look at FCD's younger players notching significant playing time.

Meanwhile, another set of fans like Danny Cress, of Hobbs, N.M., and his son, 8-year-old Kaleb, was the hardcore soccer fan who doesn't have high-profile soccer near its hometown but took advantage of a not-so-long trip to catch a Major League Soccer team.
