Over a hundred and ninety kids are taking part in Gustie Soccer Camp.It's the 19th year the Gusties have held such a camp.Soccer players from all over the area, even a couple from Mexico, are participating in this week long camp.Today the focus was on solid attempts on goal and hustling as the players took shots then had to hustle back and defend their own goal.But the camp focuses on every skill needed in the sport, promotes hard work as well as giving the campers the opportunity to learn from those playing the sport at the next level.Mike Stehlik says, "Who can really work with the kids and create in them a drive to get better and also show them its something you can do for the rest of your life."Campers seem to love the camp and keep coming back year after year.Thomas Wavrin says, "I have fun playing soccer and fun all around."Morgan Osborne says, "Just the way the ball moves on your feet and when you get a goal it just feels so good or when you make a good pass it just all connects together."Hans Johnson says, "Mostly individual ball skills know what to do when you got the ball just game situations."The recent success of the United States in the Confederation Cup has coaches happy were the sport is and where it is going moving forward.


Forest Hills Northern's Erin Sellman caps soccer career with first

If she plays soccer at Purdue, it will be on an intramural or club team."This was my senior year and it was hard to leave, but I had to give it my all this year," Sellman said. "It was really hard to finish the season and leave my friends and my team behind. I love this sport, but especially my friends and teammates."Sellman, who pulled a quad muscle and missed a couple games, also assisted on 14 goals for the Huskies, whose season ended in the regional tournament at Cedar Springs."It is always a team effort out there," Sellman said. "Any goals that are scored are the result of a team effort."Sellman played tennis at Forest Hills Northern until the sport was switched to the spring season."This is a result of four years of dedication and hard work," Forest Hills Northern soccer coach Jamie Bogart said of Sellman making the all-state team.


Troy soccer picks up more wins

In Tuesday action, Troy Indoor U14 Soccer defeated Montgomery U14 Yellow 8-7 on two goals each from Alex Goerke and Scott McLendon and four goals from James McNeill. Center midfielder Tanner Dansby held off a late surge by Montgomery to seal the victory. Troy U14 took sole possession of first place with the win.

Troy Indoor U18 Soccer also took over first place in their age division with a win over Montgomery U18 Red. After a first-half defensive struggle, that saw Nathaniel Salmon turn in a yeoman performance on his indoor debut at goalkeeper, Troy led 3-2, on goals from Andrew Bentley (one goal, one assist), Douglas McLendon (two goals, three assists), and Mitchell Payne (one goal on a kickoff). Led by an explosive second-half performance from Michael Salmon with six goals and an assist and a second McLendon goal, Troy U18 triumphed 10-8.
