Lenhart has undeniable presence

Soccer does not define the 22-year-old resident of Yorba Linda, Calif. In fact, Lenhart says he didn't start planning for a pro career until the Crew used its fourth-round pick in the 2008 Major League Soccer draft to select him.

"I honestly wanted to graduate from (Azusa Pacific University) and move to Africa and work for a nonprofit with my college buddies," Lenhart said. "My faith is really important to me, and when I got drafted I saw it as something that was happening for a reason."

Crew fans probably are happy that Lenhart decided to give MLS a go.

As a rookie, he scored four goals in just 278 minutes, spanning 10 regular-season games. He also delivered a tying goal against Kansas City in stoppage time of the Crew's first playoff match.

Lenhart is yet to score this season, but he has not been without chances.

Leonard threatens to withdraw soccer vote

City Commissioner Randy Leonard threatened Friday to withdraw his support for bringing Major League Soccer to Portland unless Merritt Paulson recants a decision to withdraw plans for a baseball stadium in Lents.

Earlier Friday, Paulson said a $48 million plan to put his Portland Beavers AAA baseball club in the Southeast Portland neighborhood lacked community support. The project therefore threatened to delay the timeline to gain approval for a $37 million upgrade of PGE Park for his Portland Timbers MLS club that will start play in 2011.

Leonard, in an e-mail sent Friday afternoon to Paulson, said he regretted how Paulson was treated during a Lents community meeting Thursday night and is worried Paulson was motivated by a "mob on the verge of being out of control" that doesn’t represent the vast majority of Lents residents.
