Port sending five seniors to Agganis All-Star Soccer Classic

After posting a disappointing 2-11-3 record in 2007, the Newburyport boys soccer team managed to qualify for the state tournament in 2008, enjoying an impressive 10-6-4 campaign. The team's reward: having five seniors invited to the 14th annual Agganis All-Star Soccer Classic on Tuesday at Manning Field in Lynn (7:30 p.m).

Newburyport graduates Tyler Stotz, Ethan Machurat, Thayer Adsit, Tom Svirsky, and Paul Cendron will join the North Squad, coached by Al Jackson of St. Mary's of Lynn.

"It feels good (to be selected)," Svirsky said. "I know people who have played in it before and they all say it's a good time. It's a good opportunity to get to play with good players from around the league that you've never played with or have only played against."

The Clippers' five selections are tied for the most with St.

Recap: Colorado vs. FC Dallas

The Colorado Rapids snapped a two-game losing streak, edging FC Dallas 1-0 in Major League Soccer action at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night.

The two Western Conference clubs battled to a stalemate through the first 79 minutes of the game, but Kosuke Kimura scored his second goal of the season with just over 10 minutes to play to give the Rapids the full points.

Rapids midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy controlled the ball inside the Dallas penalty area before playing a through-ball to Kimura making a run behind the defense. Kimura then took a touch and fired a shot high under the crossbar, over the hands of FCD goalkeeper Ray Burse for the 1-0 lead.

The Rapids (6-4-6) are back in action next Saturday at D.C. United, while Dallas (4-8-5) will aim to rebound at Real Salt Lake on July 24 in its next MLS match.

George Fox closer to adding football

The university has begun to raise money for the rest of phase one, which will include a soccer-only turf field with seats for 750 and a building for locker rooms, equipment storage and concession sales.

Phase two of the project, which will be a joint effort between the university and the Chehalem Park and Rec District, will include two full-sized grass soccer fields and a smaller grass field that can be divided into sections for use by youth soccer teams.

No date has been set for completion of the project and George Fox director of public information Rob Felton said that the addition of football is "years away."

If the Bruins add football, they will become the second NWC school in two months to add the sport. Pacific University in Forest Grove announced in June that the school plans to add football in 2010.
