| Mexico beats Guadeloupe in soccer
When Dwyane Wade checked his cell phone shortly after midnight Sunday, he got perhaps the most predictable text message of his life: the Miami Heat want to keep him. Wade said Heat president Pat Riley texted those sentiments, in a largely ceremonial move. The Heat had to wait until 12:01 a.m. on July 12 before they could formally offer an extension to the reigning NBA scoring champion, and Wade said Riley didn't wait too long before pressing the send button. Wade will meet with Riley and Heat owner Micky Arison later this summer, and those talks will surely revolve around a three-year extension that will last through the 2013-14 season. Silver Stars fall to visiting Lynx Charde Houston scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Minnesota Lynx to an 83-76 road win over the San Antonio Silver Stars.
Griffon Tennis, Golf, Soccer Lack Some Resources of Their MIAA
Much like tennis and soccer, Habermehl had to make people aware her program exists before she can begin recruiting. n n n Western just started its soccer program in 2005, and the Griffons have had a tough time gaining a foothold in the conference, winning 10 games in four years. That's not to say quick success in the MIAA isn't attainable. Washburn, which launched its soccer team in 2002, finished second in the conference just three seasons into its existence. But Hansen also is the lowest paid coach of the 10 MIAA schools the News-Press surveyed (Southwest Baptist is a private school and isn't required to provided its salary figures. The Bearcats did not respond to a request for employee salaries). Every other coach has at least a graduate assistant as well, while Hansen is a one-man crew, trying to build a new program.
Ex-Cougar Derrick to help kick start Mustangs
Garden City High graduate Karlee Derrick certainly finds herself in that category these days as the prep soccer star recently signed a letter of intent to attend Marygrove College and participate in the school's initial season of women's soccer. "It's the first team ever there and it's something I want to be a part of," Derrick said. "Coach (Tony Williams) called me a couple of times and just said that this is going to be a new program and I just want you girls to have fun and grow together as a team. He had his heart in it when he said that, and I really enjoyed hearing that." Up until a couple of weeks ago, Karlee had Siena Heights on her priority list. But a disagreement in funding allowed her to explore other options and that is when Williams came a calling. "To have a coach call me two to three times a day was special," Derrick said.
