| LF soccer star Quon to attend ESPYs
The Lake Forest High School soccer star is headed to California for the 7th Annual Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year Awards. The luncheon, hosted by ESPN's Stuart Scott, is set for July 15 in Hollywood and the nominees will walk the Red Carpet prior to the ESPY Awards. The ESPYs will be taped that evening and then broadcast on ESPN on July 19. Quon is vying for Gatorade Female High School Athlete of the Year after grabbing the national award for soccer players. The midfielder earned the honor after scoring 15 goals and dishing out 11 assists for the Scouts (18-3-2). The dynamic Quon, who also was a starter on the United States U17 World Cup team and nabbed a pair of All-American awards, will continue her career next fall at Stanford University.
Anderson Youth Soccer League prepares for opening day
As the season is ready to get started for the Anderson Youth Soccer League Division, teams and coordinators prepare for success. There are a total of seven teams, four boys teams and three girls teams with about 120 players. The teams will travel to five or six tournaments during the three month season along with playing their regular games in the District 9 area which consists of Anderson, Red Bluff, Corning, Susanville, Mt. Shasta and others. Tony Moebes of Cottonwood has been the coaching coordinator of the girls teams for the past two years and has been coaching soccer for the past six years. He has seen continuing growth in the program as the popularity of soccer grows. He practices with his U16 girls team two nights a week and is also working with a U14 girls team.
Men's Soccer Adds Seven Members to 2009 Squad
NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. � The Niagara men�s soccer team will welcome seven new additions this fall, as Mike Cunningham (Grosse Point Farms, Mich.), Bryan DaCruz (Barrie, Ont.), Rene DeZorzi (Maple, Ont.), David Keller (East Aurora, N.Y.), Casey Sheehan (Kenmore, N.Y.), Christopher Skelton (Aurora, Ont.) and Jacob Vertel (Detroit, Mich.) will all take part in the 2009 season for head coach Dermot McGrane. �I am very pleased with our 2009 recruiting class,� McGrane said. �We have addressed some specific needs on the team, while adding a great deal of depth to the squad. This talented group of players will play a big part in our team as we work towards winning the MAAC conference and securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament.� Mike Cunningham � 5-6 � Grosse Point Farms, Mich.
