Bishop O'Dowd drops heartbreaker in HAAL girls soccer

For 80 minutes, the Bishop O'Dowd High School girls soccer team turned away every possible scoring opportunity from rival Castro Valley in a Hayward Area Athletic League showdown on Jan. 9.

However, the Trojans took advantage on their last scoring chance as Celeste Martore scored on a header off a corner kick from Eileen Maes to lift Castro Valley to a 1-0 win over the host Dragons.

"We knew it was going to be a battle and both teams played hard," Castro Valley coach Paul McCallion said. "It could have gone either way, but we kept battling and were finally able to come out ahead."

After regulation expired, the Trojans' Micaela Castain had a chance for the initial goal of the game, but the Dragons (5-3-2, 4-1-0 HAAL) defense rose to the challenge by knocking the ball out of bounds to give Castro Valley (10-2-0, 6-0-0) a corner kick.
